The Atonement
When it comes to the atonement of Christ's death, we are again presented with the importance of grasping the bigness of God, our sin, and His love. But what is the atonement and how can the death of one man atone for all the sins of every Christian in history? These are weighty questions deserving of a weighty conversation. For help in this, John and Chuck are looking to a sermon from Solomon Stoddard in the book Salvation in Full Color.
Solomon Stoddard (1643—1729) was the grandfather of Jonathan Edwards. He wrote a sermon on the atonement, one of the most extraordinary expressions of love by the King.
There is a mighty virtue in Christ’s blood to atone for sin.
The father would not have put Christ to this service of bearing our sin on the cross if his death would not have purchased true pardon for sin.
God promised to Jesus that his death would be accepted for the doing away of sin.
The virtue of Christ’s blood is illustrated in the sacrifices that were offered in the old covenant.
The sacraments of the New Testament teach us to hope in the blood of Christ.
God commands us to trust in the blood of Christ
Why is there such virtue in the blood of Christ?
Because Jesus actually suffered the legal and full curse of the offended in broken law.
This Jesus who suffered was the eternal son of God and not merely the sinless man.
Christ who suffered was also perfectly holy.
Jesus was appointed by the father in eternity past for this sacrifice.
