Elders and Deacons, Part II

“He doth preach most, that doth live best.” — John Boys

This week, Chuck Baggett and Teddy James continue discussing the importance, role, and qualifications of an elder and deacon. What does it mean to be above reproach? What about an elder’s marriage or children?

“He doth preach most, that doth live best.” — John Boys

This is an important thing for all churches to consider. We cannot take God’s standards lightly or attempt to lower them. Nor can we try to be more severe than God Himself. This is wonderful fuel for how to pray for your pastors and deacons. Pray they would be men who pursue these things.

Namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,” (Titus 1:6–7).

An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,” (1 Timothy 3:2).
