Jesus Did Not Come to Improve Old Religion
As we did last week, we want to present you to a sermon Dr. John Snyder preached at Christ Church New Albany. These messages are specifically given to draw out hearts to Christ and to see anew how He makes reconciliation with God the Father possible for us.
John looks at Luke 5:17-39.
Jesus did not come to improve the old religion. He also did not come to improve your old life. We tend to look to old writers in the past because they are so helpful and articulate. However, in this very specific instance, John disagrees with the commentaries of J.C. Ryle and Mathew Henry. He draws his distinction because of the full context of the passage and the fact all synoptic gospels places the passage in the same narrative progression.
We often look at the incarnation of Jesus and examine what He came do accomplish. We do this for good reason. However, we must also understand what He did not come to do. Jesus did not take on human flesh to make the old religion better. He didn’t come to make your old life better. He came to fulfill the law and give you new life.
We hope the sermon from this week and last week help you have a clear understanding of why Jesus came to live and die in perfect obedience to His Father’s will.
Next week we will return to John’s office with a discussion on how to study Scripture well in 2021.
