Regeneration
Richard Owen Roberts writes that regeneration is probably the most significant doctrine for the American church to rethink. That is a bold statement, but it bears much truth. This week's sermon, “The Nature and Necessity of Regeneration” by Jonathan Dickinson, is a prime example of how much understanding we lack when it comes to this doctrine.
Jonathan Dickinson (1688 – 1747) was a pastor in the early 1700s in New England. He’s considered the second most influential evangelical in the Colonies, second only to Jonathan Edwards. Dickinson was named as the first President of Princeton Seminary.
What is regeneration? What is this new birth? Regeneration is a new spiritual and supernatural principle wrought by the Spirit of God in all the faculties of the soul, inclining and enabling unto the exercise of a life of faith in Christ and new obedience to God.
1. Regeneration is a new principle in the new life.
2. This is a supernatural principle.
3. The Spirit of God is the immediate Agent.
4. Regeneration is a new and supernatural principle worked by the Spirit in all our faculties.
