Servant Songs I
We’re beginning a short series on the Servant Songs. The Servant Songs include Isaiah 42:1–4; Isaiah 49:1–6; Isaiah 50:4–7; and Isaiah 52:13–53:12.
Songs are 1) Theology put to music and 2) Theology put into poetry.
These Songs have a specific order and a particular context. Isaiah 1-39 is distinctly different from chapters 40-66. The first half of Isaiah deals with the sin of the people of Israel. They have strayed very far from their Maker. Even the Israelite leaders have grown careless. (Does this remind you of our day and our trite Evangelicalism?)
In Isaiah 40, we see glimpses of the dawn of the coming Son. “Here is your God!” Behold. Look. He is coming. This is a command—do not miss this. It’s not ‘extra’ or beneficial. It is sweet, but it’s a command for us, it’s essential, to look and behold Christ. There is no one like Him! There is no one but Him.
