The Work of the Holy Spirit

John Snyder and Chuck Baggett continue the series on Salvation in Full Color. This week, they’re looking at a sermon on the work of the Holy Spirit by George Whitefield.

George Whitefield (1714-1770) was the great preacher of the Great Awakening. Whitefield was considered the supreme preacher of the gospel. His sermons tended to be much more simple and half of the sermon was him pleading with the sinner.

Whitefield was born in 1714 and his father died not long after that, leaving him to be raised by his mother. Whitefield was converted at Oxford when he was there as a student. He befriended John and Charles Wesley and their meetings together were mockingly called “The Holy Club.” After his time at Oxford, he traveled in the UK and US preaching the gospel and played a central role in the Great Awakening.

Who is the Holy Spirit and what is His role in turning someone from a person who hates the law of God to someone who loves to meditate on it night and day? George Whitefield explains that while spending a great deal of his time pleading with sinners to cry out to the Holy Spirit to do the work that only He can do.

  1. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin.

  2. The Holy Spirit convicts of righteousness

  3. The Holy Spirit convicts of judgment.

“And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8).
