A Documentary on Revival
“If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God.”
— Charles Spurgeon
Coming in 2022: A Documentary on Revival with Reformation Heritage Books and Dan Pugh
The term “Revival” elicits different thoughts and emotions for every person who hears the word. Some hear it and immediately feel bored, believing the stories of God moving among His people are equal to fairy tales and children’s stories. Others get an emotional rush, anticipating their next spiritual mountaintop experience. Still others simply look at their calendars in unbelief it is that time of the year again.
But the Bible has a clear understanding and description of Revival and it has no room for any of the beliefs that fuel the aforementioned responses. So that begs the question, “What is Revival?” And if there are so many wrong ideas surrounding it, how can we identify a proper understanding of it?
While Scripture is complete and sufficient for our understanding of Revival, God has also provided help through church history. Studying the special times of God’s grace moving through His people during the Welsh revivals, the First and Second Great Awakenings, and other special seasons, we can also see the dangers, abuses, instruments, and effects of revival.
Understanding and conveying the truths of Scripture and church history regarding revival is the heart and driving force behind the newest joint project from Reformation Heritage Books and Media Gratiae.
Revival (working title) will be filmed on location across England, Wales, the Ilse of Lewis, and America. It will highlight names commonly associated with Revival such as Whitefield, Rowland, and Edwards. The film and studies will also introduce viewers to men who are not as well known today but were faithful ministers in their eras and areas.
The film and study will be directed by Dan Pugh (Matthew Henry: The Life and Legacy of the Bible Commentator) and written by Jeremy Walker. Jeremy served as the narrator for the film Through the Eyes of Spurgeon and as a contributor to Puritan: All of Life to the Glory of God and Behold Your God: The Weight of Majesty.
