The Life and Times of Matthew Henry

You have probably heard us mention George Whitfield many times on the podcast. Whitefield was one of the greatest preachers of the English language. Have you ever considered what resources he used in preparing his sermons? What about John Wesley? They both used and benefited from a particular commentary that has not been out of print since it was published more than 300 years ago.

Whitefield is said to have studied the commentary on his knees and to have read through it four times. At the end of his life, he called the writer, “The Great Mr. Henry.” This great man is Matthew Henry. And this impactful commentary is his Commentary on the Whole Bible.

Countless Christians know Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary well. However, few know much about its author. As Matthew says in the episode, “The best of men are men at their best,” so we do not venerate Henry. But we also understand God has gifted certain men for particular use in His Church. Matthew Henry was one such gifted man.

For those reasons, we were particularly excited when we learned a friend of ours named Daniel Pugh produced a feature-length documentary titled Matthew Henry: The Life and Time of the Bible Commentator.

We met up with Daniel while we were in the U.K. to film our upcoming study on the Church. While we were with him, we decided to record a special episode discussing Matthew Henry and Daniel’s journey of making a film about him.

This is Daniel’s first film and we think he did a great job. We believe the movie is so good, we agreed to distribute it for Daniel across America. You can find more information about the film, and purchase it for yourself, on the Media Gratiae blog.
